Lead Teacher Bus Tour Cashmere and Clarkeville REFLECTION and DISCUSSION
CASHMERE PRIMARY SCHOOL Inquiry Model and student recording of Inquiry process was excellent- Inquiry student Diary - to reinforce the actuall journey of learning to reach the celebration. Interesting that the school feel some of the core learning/teaching is being lost with Inquiry process losing sight of this. They are currently working on fine tuning the inquiry to ensure curriculum areas such as science are integrated. Chris Quinn West Melton Writing School currently in first year of writing contract. Great to see writing goals/expectations and marking system on display. Students all using biro's for written work. Clear marking system - green (student identification of successes) yellow ( teacher identification of successes)
small box with NSL (next step learning for student written by teacher) Chris Quinn West Melton Independant learning Class Selected students who fall within set criteria invited to be in self directed class. These students agree to work independantly and motivate their own learning direction. Cashmere had one class of this nature. Chris Quinn West Melton CLARKEVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL Penny spent time discussing Inquiry model based on Kath Murdoch. She discussed the some of the issues when they first started inquiry such as too much time spent on immersion and getting to the 'making a difference' was being left behind or rushed. The school now has a two week period for immersion, All classes integrate/rotate for this stage. Most of senior/middle school were involved with science fair projects. Nearly all students focussed and knew where they were heading. Chris Quinn West Melton REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS Inquiry was successful in these schools. Students could articulate what they were inquirying and understood the different steps of the model the school chose to use. Leadership in children was key and co-ownership between child and teacher of learning pathway clear.
I will present back to my own school the highlights, successes and obstacles I saw in the schools' systems. Linda Sweeny

How might you use this back in your own school/class? Definelty use Student Diary for Inquiry Process to follow the learning journey. Chris Quinn West Melton
What follow up are you going to do with your staff as a result of today? Use slide show of photos taken on day for discussion points. Will discuss all of the above in particular the Student Diary record of Inquiry process.Chris Quinn West Melton
What did you notice that was key to focus today?
Inquiry is an integral part of both school's programmes, but maybe twice a year and does not always have to make a difference beyond the student's thinking. Concepts are authentic and current and decided by staff for the next year.
Students are the centre of their own learning and are able to articulate their learning. However there will always be some students who will need to be guided in their learning. Why did this stand out?
Currently struggling with concepts/big ideas/themes, so the approaches used were worth putting into the melting pot.
Students were engaged in their learning and able/willing to talk about.
Students who could lead their own learning were given the freedom to do so. Others supported irrespective of age. How might you use back in own class?
Use a modified version of a "Chill License" with my responsible students. What followup with staff?
Contact Kerry at Cashmere and find out more to share "big idea" approach with staff.
Share personal reflections with colleagues. Cheryl Morrall

What did you notice that was key to focus today?
The children throughout the two schools were familiar with the processes involved in an inquiry with teachers and children using diaries to record learning etc.. The staff collectively decided on the model best for their school and Big Ideas and themes for the following year were decided by the staff in the fourht term, not set down in a 'concrete' plan. Coverage of Science throughout the school is being addressed through the use of a form of 'benchmarks' on what is seen as important for the children to know by the end of each level.
Why did this stand out?
What really stood out for me was the method used within the weekly plan where children managed their time using a diary to set goals, plan and record. The children were able to take control of their own learning and what a great way to further develop the values and key competencies. How might you use back in own class?
The weekly planning by the children is an area I am keen to extend further within my class.
What followup with staff?
Using the Big Idea and themes
Are we using the Inquiry model best for our school?
What do we want our children to have achieved before leaving the different levels?
Val Blackwell
Governors Bay
What did you notice that was key to focus today?
The awareness that the children had of their learning and their inquiry processes and the ideas and sequences that staff had in both schools to sucessfully get through their inquiries.
Why did this stand out?
Because we are currently in the process of trialing our new Inquiry Model at LCS, and it was good to see where other schools have changed their models and how they run each stage. How might you use back in own class?
Giving the children the opportunity to self manage their work habits as the chidlren at Cashmere did (not to that extent)!
What followup with staff?
Different strategies for each Inquiry stage.
A lto fo the visuals from the classrooms we saw.
