Burnham School Linda talked about using the digital camera effectively with her children to enable them to take photos to support their inquiry learning. She used a Digital Camera Power Point highlighting using the rule of thirds, angles, reflections etc. The children worked in small groups to take a photograph each, downloaded them onto the laptop and shared the photos on the interactive whiteboard, discussing each using PMI. The children then used the photos to create Comic Life publications.
Tamara shared how she has been using the MOE interactive reading CD-Roms as part of her reading programme. She showed us how she has also used inspiration plans to set independent activites for the CD-Rom follow up work. Tamara then shared her kids I-Movie for Purpose Power. I-Movie is a programme that comes on all Macs and can be used to edit and make movies using digital camcorder footage. You can add titles, sounds, music, voice overs, transitions and lots of other features that end up making awesome improvements to your footage.
RTLB Sue shared about Electronic Story Books on CD Rom sent to each NZ school since 2002 for teachers to use as part of their literacy programme. (One CD for Yr 5-6 and one for Yr 7-10) The research results (NZCER researcher Sue McDowall) clearly showed gains in literacy in word reading, comprehension, enjoyment in reading, and highlighted how the children found reading easier. Each CD-Rom has 10 stories on it, along with activities for each story. The teacher can use this resource for guided reading lessons (there is a PDF on the CD of teacher notes), shared reading and independent reading. The CD-Roms can be loaded onto indivdiual computers or a school network. The MOE encourages students to take these home and load them on their home computer. If you can't locate the CD-Roms in your school contact Learning Media.
West Melton talked about the use of You Tube in their Power of Entertainment Inquiry Unit. This included the use of different kinds of dance as a starter to writing different kinds of dance, dance lessons broken into parts (Thriller) and the origins of different kinds of music. They are using comic life for their calendar art this year. This includes a revision of using the digital camera.
Karen from Kirwee shared the wikispace site created for her classroom. We discussed the importance of keeping the site safe and how to load video onto the wikispace.
Kathryn from Dunsandel shared Comic Life from experiences the children had during Term 2 and 3. The children had written recounts about these experiences and then had to create a Comic Life. Also, the focus for Term 3 has been reporting and creating Newspapers. The children are working on completing their newspapers at the moment.
Simon and Chantal from Leeston talked about using powerpoint to put a presentation together to celebrate learning this Term. Looked at www.morguefile.com which is a place to get photo's legally. Speech buubles inserted into slides for speaking. Children practiced their speeches into the web cam then watched it to see how they could improve it.
