EDUIC758 Producing and Integrating effective ICT resources into the classroom

Assignment 3 – Producing a Multimedia Resource
Due 6 October

Assignment 3 also has two parts: the first is to plan, design, produce, and implement a curriculum based multi-media presentation reflecting educationally sound instructional design; and the second part is to write a formal evaluation (1,000 words) of the multimedia resource based on student feedback, critical reflection, and relevant learning theory.
You will need to create a multimedia resource, eg a PowerPoint Keynote etc. I am going to have a discussion with Ann your marker about using Comic Life, so watch this space. Check out the rubric on Studentnet, where you drop your assignments for all the details.

Assignment 2 – Concept Map/Higher Order Thinking
Would it be possible to have this assignment complete by 4 August.

You may well have a mindmap from last year, or will complete one soon. Its OK to use mindmaps that you created last year as long as they cover all the requirements for the assignment. I will put some references to urls for readings and research here soon. There is a reading in my course book, which may be older that your course book.
Reading 7. Computer Based Concept Mapping.
Concept mapping

Assignment 2 has two parts: the first is to plan, design and implement a concept mapping activity to facilitate higher order thinking in your classroom; and the second part is to write a journal style article (approximately 1,000 words) which identifies the learning intentions, links to research on concept mapping or semantic networking, and describes how the activity engages students in higher order thinking. Further details are provided below.

2.1 The concept map/higher order thinking activity
Identify an appropriate use of concept mapping to support higher order thinking in a particular curriculum area for your class.

Complete a planning sheet:
- Describe the curriculum links and topic.
- Describe the student group (level, number of students, particular needs)
- Identify the learning outcomes associated with the activity.
- Explain how the planned activity will support higher order thinking.

Develop a concept map activity:
- Create a skeleton map for students to build on. This should include multiple levels; and at least one hyperlink. The concept map activity should be more than a 'brainstorm'. It should require thoughtful participation by students as they contribute to, change, label links, and interact with the activity.
- Write the instructions or activity sheet to support the activity.

Implement and Observe
- Implement the activity with your class
- Observe how the children use the activity and in particular how thinking skills are demonstrated or supported within the activity

2.2 Write the article
- The article should be suitable for publication in a practitioner-style journal, ie one which is written for teachers in the classroom. While it should be practical in nature the key points should be supported by reference to authoritative research on the topic.
- The article should clearly identify the learning intentions, links to research on concept mapping or semantic networking, and describes how the activity engages students in higher order thinking.
- Minimum of three articles referenced correctly in APA style.

You can begin working on your first assignment......
Janet the Admin manager will enter you all into Studentnet where there will be notes ,drop boxes for assignments etc.
Then everything will be on Studentnet.

In the meantime, how about we aim to get assign 1 complete by 31 May. Not long I agree BUT you will all have work that you can use for this assignment. USE things that you have created in the past..... maybe flash them up a bit........ BUT use them. This is about working smarter not harder.

Now your hand book contains some really useful information. Pages are approximate becuase I last years book.........
Pg 89 - 124. Helps with how to do various things if you wanted to use them, like cut here tabs, or leader tabs.
Pg 125 - 153. Flick through the pages and look at the different elements and how you can flash up your documents

At this stage don't worry about the readings in the front of the book. if you need them I'll tell you the ones to look out for.

There is NOT an essay with this
At the end just reflect on the justification for the inclusion of those particular resources. So say what you used them for, and then highlight the best elements eg the newsletter was very popular, and looked good because of the montage of pictures in the header.
The resource was a time line was for my Inquiry topic to help the chn........

Assignment 1 – Portfolio of Resources
Develop an electronic portfolio demonstrating the ability to create effective digital and print resources for classroom use.

8.1 analyse, design, create and evaluate effective print based resources for specific curriculum use using common productivity software

For this first assignment you should select at least three, and no more than five, of your best resources, highlighting what you regard as the most effective elements of each. The selection should include:
1. A resource for students to use (eg an activity sheet, homework sheet, assignment outline)
2. A two-page newsletter or information sheet (eg ski trip, camp, weekly news about your class)
3. One other resource of your choice.

The resources should also demonstrate your competence at using productivity software (word processing, desktop publishing, etc) and it is expected that the resources in your portfolio will provide evidence that you can use a range of features at an intermediate level. You should try to incorporate a range from the following:
- Bullets and numbered points
- Tabs, tables, and columns
- Fill in portions using leader tabs (eg areas for children to write on, permission slip)
- Use of images or digital photos
- Objects, simple charts, or borders.
- Headers and/or footers

These resources should demonstrate effective design principles, in particular:
- Balance on page
- Effective use of white space
- Appropriate emphasis of key elements
- Interesting elements (graphics, borders)
- Consistent use of heading styles, fonts, design features
- Understanding of basic typography eg formatting of dates, times
